Lord Mayor of London to lead City’s first post-COVID trip to China

The Lord Mayor of London, William Russell, is set to lead the City of London’s first official delegation to China since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The visit is aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries and promoting London as a global financial center.

The trip, scheduled to take place in November 2021, will see the Lord Mayor and a group of business leaders visit a number of Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. The delegation will hold meetings with government officials, financial regulators, and business leaders to discuss opportunities for collaboration and investment.

The Lord Mayor’s visit comes at a time when the UK and China are seeking to deepen their economic ties, following the UK’s departure from the European Union. China is one of the UK’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade between the two countries totaling over £80 billion in 2019.

The visit is also significant as it marks the City of London’s first major international trip since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has had a significant impact on global travel and trade, with many countries imposing travel restrictions and lockdowns to control the spread of the virus.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the Lord Mayor is confident that the visit will be a success. Speaking about the trip, he said: “I am delighted to be leading the first Lord Mayor’s visit to China since the pandemic began. This is a significant moment for the City of London and for UK-China relations. We are looking forward to building on our strong economic ties and promoting London’s role as a global financial center.”

The Lord Mayor’s visit to China is expected to focus on a number of key areas, including financial services, technology, and sustainable development. The delegation will also look at opportunities for collaboration in areas such as green finance, fintech, and smart cities.

The visit is part of a wider effort by the UK government to deepen economic ties with China and promote trade and investment between the two countries. In recent years, the UK has been seeking to position itself as a hub for Chinese investment and trade, with initiatives such as the China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue and the China-UK Joint Investment Fund.

Overall, the Lord Mayor’s visit to China is a significant milestone for the City of London and for UK-China relations. It marks a new chapter in the economic relationship between the two countries and provides an opportunity to build on the strong ties that already exist. As the world begins to emerge from the pandemic, it is more important than ever for countries to work together and strengthen economic ties, and the Lord Mayor’s visit to China is an important step in that direction.
